چکیده

We demonstrate a simple, efficient and novel self-assembly based method to fabricate arrays of suspended polymeric nanofibers of polyacrylonitrile and SU-8 negative photoresist by electrospinning on micro-fabricated posts of resorcinol–formaldehyde (RF) gel. The suspended electrospun nanofibers together with the RF gel posts were subsequently pyrolyzed in an inert atmosphere to yield large area monolithic structures of suspended glassy carbon nanofibers (CNF) integrated on RF gel derived carbon posts. The electrospun nanofibers self-assemble to connect the posts owing to a stronger electric field on their tips, obviating the need for positioning and integration of carbon nanowires with the underlying microstructures and paving the way for fabricating novel carbon based micro and nanoscale devices. The fabrication technique also allowed measurements of electrical conductivity of a single suspended CNF between carbon electrodes using I–V characteristics and comparison of the carbon nanowire conductivities for the CNF derived from different poly-

Improved graphitization and electrical conductivity of suspended carbon nanofibers derived from carbon nanotube/polyacrylonitrile composites by directed electrospinning

Single suspended carbon nanofibers on carbon micro-structures were fabricated by directed electrospinning and subsequent pyrolysis at 900 C of carbon nanotube/polyacrylonitrile (CNT/PAN) composite material. The electrical conductivity of the nanofibers was measured at different weight fractions of CNTs. It was found that the conductivity increased almost two orders of magnitude upon adding 0.5 ...

Fabrication of Carbon Nanotube Polymer Actuator Using Nanofiber Sheet

Carbon nanotube polymer actuators were developed using composite nanofiber sheets fabricated by multi-walled carbon nanotubes(MWCNTs) and poly (vinylidene fluorideco-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP). Nanofiber sheets were fabricated by electrospinning method. The effect of flow rate and polymer concentration on nanofiber formation were verified for optimum condition for fabricating nanofiber she...

Organized arrays of nanostructures in freely suspended nanomembranes

This paper gives an overview of our recent work on freely suspended layer-by-layer nanomembranes containing organized arrays of nanostructures such as carbon nanotubes or gold nanoparticles. These unique organized arrays toughen the membrane and add interesting optical properties which are useful in sensor applications. Gold nanoparticle encapsulated nanomembranes were characterized by surface ...

Thermal Stability of Epitaxial Graphene Electrodes for Conductive Polymer Nanofiber Devices

We used large area, monolayer graphene epitaxially grown on SiC (0001) as contact electrodes for polymer nanofiber devices. Our fabrication process, which avoids polymer resist residues on the graphene surface, results in graphene-polyaniline nanofiber devices with Ohmic contacts and electrical conductivity comparable to that of Au-nanofiber devices. We further checked the thermal stability of ...

Electrical conductivity, impedance, and percolation behavior of carbon nanofiber and carbon nanotube containing gellan gum hydrogels

The electrical impedance behavior of gellan gum (GG), GG-carbon nanotube, and GG-carbon nanofiber hydrogel composites is reported. It is demonstrated that the impedance behavior of these gels can be modeled using a Warburg element in series with a resistor. Sonolysis (required to disperse the carbon fillers) does not affect GG hydrogel electrical conductivity (1.2 ± 0.1 mS/cm), but has a detrim...
